The turn most software devs have taken shouldn't have surprised me. Well before LLMs, most devs I've met had the soul of a landlord

Sometimes "landlord trying to be cool". Sometimes "landlord who wants suffering with the rent"

But both see the world with the eyes of a rent-seeker

A decade ago during a project, I was griping about the trouble friends of mine had been having with their landlord, who was controlling the thermostat remotely to save money (rent was inclusive of bills). This was a shit thing to do when you don't know a family's schedules or even the local weather…

But when I was venting about this, the other devs got defensive and angry.

Turns out they were both landlords who did exactly the same thing to their tenants

@baldur Reminds me of the right-wing devs I worked with in the USA at a company with unionized hourly workers. They'd complain about the union and get mad at me for pointing out that we got > 50% more time off than average and other benefits from the union presence. Then the company got rid of the union workforce and cut benefits, and those same devs joined a class action suit (basically) over the loss of benefits.
