@baldur Most of the consultants I know have been honest to the fault of being underemployed these days, but these were more colleagues than ones hired by management at the companies I worked. In the latter cases, I've seen about half be dishonest, but to be fair, it's what management asked for. (In one case, management found a certify for pay CMM company, just because they were unwilling to commit enough to get level 3 without cheating. Yes. The company is now defunct.)

Actually, consultant can mean different things.
My experience was that at a low implementation level honesty was generally not a problem, but the the oddities of the German market have helped me probably: it has a relatively big IT consultating/freelancing/contradicting market that is relatively uniformly well paid. And the GDPR. And employment regulations which means that long-term engagements are not the norm.
So the risk of being honest is low. In @baldur
3 decades one project manager did go so far to get me fired, and was not nice about it, so I raised a stink a forced some money out of the agency. GDPR be praised, 9 months later the agency called again, a sudden agent offered me a different project and was curious because my file suggested that my last project must have ended early. Sure we exchanged only a couple of attorney letters. But closed project no reason to keep that stuff, beyond the poor accounting stuff.

(And the reason the project manager disliked me, I refused to recommend a specific IBM cluster product. Sadly it was for the wrong kind of clusters. High performance clusters with basically a swarm of identical nodes. Not managing classes of diverse nodes. No idea why the idiot was set on this combination of letters. But the moment I explained in easy to understand language why this is a no go, not with their network structure, and security architecture, and use case ...)

@baldur Honesty is a reason I've never made much as a consultant. I'm perfectly willing to charge $200/hour to tell you things you don't want to hear, and offer solutions that'll not show immediate returns. Sorry, but doing things the right way takes time.
