Free software people I am begging you to stop naming your software

๐Ÿฆ So you've made a great program that pulses all over the paid alternatives, great, now for the love of god please delegate the naming of that software to someone Normal so you don't end up calling it something like Kalculator

Show thread

The biggest hurdle towards Jabber adoption is people calling it XMPP

Show thread

Like, saying to your mate down the pub "Oh you should get on Jabber" versus "You should get on ecks em pee pee"

One of these words sounds like a thing for talking about whatever with your mates, the other sounds like a thing for bollocking around with config files so you can talk to other people who bollock around with config files about bollocking around with config files

Before you commit to a name for your free software you should at least once say it aloud in a public place

Show thread

๐Ÿฐ *fiddling with phone* ugh, what did he say it was called, exemplary pee? oh ffs now I gotta confirm my age again...

Show thread

๐Ÿง Finally, my new search software is finished
๐Ÿง Twice as fast and user friendly as the corpo shit, but free and empowering and only contains useful information
๐Ÿง This is going to change the world
๐Ÿง I call it Andrew's New Userfriendly Search

Show thread

๐Ÿฐ I'm forking ANUS because of the godawful name
๐Ÿฐ My new project is called Pete's (fork of) Andrew's Interesting New User (friendly) Search

Show thread

๐Ÿน Honestly I think the name should be neutral while representing the underlying technology, which is why my fork is called hhgxyxynszzyr

Show thread

๐Ÿน It's a bit of a niche name I know but look at Facebook, they had a crap name and millions of marketing dollars and succeeded anyway and all I have to deal with is a crap name

๐Ÿน hhgxyxynszzyr, trips right off the tongue

Show thread

@ifixcoinops Oh, you don't like that it doesn't have a cute name? Okay, we can rebrand to something that is a bit snappier. How about (SLUR)? What, you don't like (SLUR)? You're the one who wanted a fun name, and (SLUR) is certainly catchy and memorable. This is your fault.

@pence I have literally seen forum threads about people trying to get GNU IMP taught in schools

@ifixcoinops *long and pained exhale*

I have literally started learning Krita even though I prefer the more Photoshop-esque metaphors of its competitor, just on principle

@pence Krita honestly slaps, as someone who made the switch from photoshop last year

Its name is... it's fine. Like, it's not *great,* but look at what it's compared to y'know, low fucking bar

@ifixcoinops @pence Krita is just playful word ftom Swedish rita (draw).

It's always nice to see developer using their own native language for FOSS softwares :)

@techpengu @ifixcoinops @pence rita = draw, krita = crayon / piece of chalk. So a very normal and descriptive name for Swedish speakers. :blobcatreading:

Follow

@joakimfors @techpengu @ifixcoinops @pence Now you're just making the (US) English speakers sound like Ugly Americans. :-)
