@a11yMel One thing to consider is that GitHub is owned by Microsoft, so it is subject to government pressures on Big Tech. (Microsoft is known for putting in backdoors for the NSA, etc.)
Codeberg (https://codeberg.org) would be a better choice. It is also free software (better term than open, FOSS, or FLOSS), which GitHub isn't.
IAC, keep a local backup in the event you might have to move it.
Good luck with your project!
@micahilbery @lwriemen I’ll use GitHub just because that’s where all my projects are and I back them up on physical hard drives from time to time. I def agree that accessibility it’s important & there are good folks at GitHub working on this.
@a11yMel @lwriemen Absolutely, GitHub folks have done a lot of great work around accessibility. I'm hoping the more open alternatives like Codeberg, Forgejo, and GitLab catch up soon🤞 Because while they are amazing products, It's really hard to actually recommend them apart from mirroring until then.
@micahilbery Looking at Forgejo recently, which Codeberg is based on, and accessibility is one of their core values. What was your statement based upon?
@a11yMel
@lwriemen @a11yMel I've seen several blind users post on the fediverse that they were unable to use Codeberg due to various issues with screen reader use. I think Forgejo/Codeberg do care about these issues but fixing things takes time, money, and expertise. Things that github has in spades. I think Forgejo will get there though.
@lwriemen @a11yMel If moving, I would say to mirror it to/from Codeberg as codeberg is not as accessible yet. While I absolutely agree we should all be trying to reduse our dependance on github and US based services, please don't forget people with disabilities.
