In my recent experience ringing businesses & organisations in the US these days, *no one* picks up their phone. It all goes to answerphone. I seldom get call backs (suspect most USians can't work out international calling). Left wondering why people bother having phones there.

@lightweight Businesses having a phone number they don't answer feels *weird*. Just don't have one if you aren't going to answer it.

I hope some of the complication is that you are calling from overseas. Can you fix that with some service to have your calls originating in the US? Not that it will help them answer, but at least they might call you back.
