Hah, on #RNZ they're just noting that the #NZGov't used #GoogleAnalytics among other (foreign) 3rd party #SurveillanceCapitalist services on its online census service. It's embarrassing that we're still dealing with this. Thanks @thomasbeagle for being sensible. Gov't staff assurances "that everything is compliant" are bullshit - the people giving them clearly don't have the skills to credibly offer them.

@lightweight @thomasbeagle about time!

As I'm sure you're aware, Matomo Analytics is a good option, we even have one of the core developers living in New Zealand!

@puck @thomasbeagle yup, we're spoilt for choice. I'm running instances of both a Matomo and Plausible (another #FOSS option), both of which are excellent. We need informed people deciding these things, not just people who read (and believe!!) marketing PR from foreign big tech corps.

I think you're giving them too little credit. They're probably too intelligent to base choices on marketing literature; they're choices are probably based on opinion articles paid for by the big tech advertising. Ziff-Davis magazines or the equivalent in Medium/Substack/Twitter posts. :-0
