The software engineering research community has a problem with (lack of) ethic approval culture when experimenting on free/open source software developers.
@zacchiro A little bit of a stretch to indict the whole"software engineering research community" (whatever that means) over this.
@lwriemen indeed I'm not making that comment based just on this. I work in the field and this is just the n-th example I came across in my career. (Although it is an egregious one.)
