The bike shop I work at, #REI, just got back to me to tell me that they are going ahead with their policy of installing cameras in the shop to monitor employees. They say these are not used to track productivity, but the CEO is a union busting ex-Amazon executive and he has given himself that power, so that's enough for me. My last day will be mid-May and I am now properly desperate to find a new job before I loose my house. Leads in the bike or software industry welcome in or around #Atlanta.

@frost @sam why would a coop hire an ex-Amazon executive?!

@airfive @frost oh they haven't been a co-op in years. There's no democracy among the members, and you can't even get a dividend anymore, it's now just a loyalty program. They're just co-op washing at this point.

@sam @airfive @frost I was angered when the Mountain Equipment Coop () board sold its membership out of a co-op to private equity without notification or a vote, but I guess I should take some solace that they were at least explicit about it.

@keverets @airfive @frost oh yah, I remember that happening; what ever happened with that? Seems like it would be illegal and they would have been sued, but I don't know their bylaws, was it somehow an unaddressed thing that the board was actually allowed to do?

@sam @airfive @frost

The sale went ahead, the members lost their $5 ownership without any compensation. A bunch of people were laid off and some of the stores closed. The rest are still there, selling overpriced goods on whatever goodwill still remains for the brand.

It should have been illegal, but was allowed under legislation that allows financially troubled companies to restructure, which trumped the bylaws of the co-operative.

@keverets @airfive @frost ahhh, thanks for the info, that hurts, but makes sense. I wonder if the bylaws could interact with that law in any way, ie. say "if we ever restructure under this law, members must vote on a deferred by back or be given board seats in the new entity"?
