Welcome to “The De-Google Project”, in which my family starts the project of lessening our dependence on Big-Tech services: tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/20

@timbray I was considering Plex, then had a look at the amount of data gathering they do (at least from the client side). It’s a lot. The rest of their business model also rubs me the wrong way.

@HerbT Got a link to more on that subject? I'd like to like Plex.

@timbray It's a combination of pulling, and linking, your server metadata to you. Client side data collection, and selling the data to third parties. And then there’s the ad driven streaming component. Many seem to be ok with all of this, but I find it pretty gross.

Oh, when you do get to the un-Adobe phase, have a look at the Affinity Suite. affinity.serif.com/en-gb/

@HerbT @timbray how does jellyfin compare both technically and from a privacy perspective? I've been recommended it as an alternative, but have yet to try

@keverets @timbray I’ve only briefly had Jellyfin running. It worked well, but I realized it was overkill for my modest local network streaming requirements. From a privacy perspective, there’s no data being collected.
