Whenever I touch an android device I am struck by how different the android experience must be for the people who write android documentation.

I’m trying to get a vaccine passport set up on an android device and… can’t? Like, the pdf is in the device and I can’t? I tried using the QR code but it does nothing and goes nowhere. I want to create a shortcut to it on the Home Screen but Android just… doesn’t do that? Like, the OS doesn’t give you that option, and Google Drive has no “open a file” widget? The documentation says “use Google pay”, but the Pay on this device doesn’t admit the existence of passports?

Oh hey i can have a Home Screen shortcut if I upload the doc to Google drive. So, I can create a shortcut to this file that’s on my phone as long as I upload it to a server and do a round trip over the network every time I want to look at it. This is sane and reasonable.

The end result of this is "Vaccine passports on Android are hit or miss depending on your region, even if they've had vaccine passports for months, and Ontario is a miss. If you want a shortcut on your desktop that doesn't make a round trip over the network, upload it to Google Drive, then set it (in Drive) to "available offline", _then_ in Drive you can add a shortcut to your desktop.

The people who make Android really don't think very highly of the people who use it, gotta say.

@mhoye it more depends on your file manager, launcher, installed PDF reader, etc. Those aren't really "OS" or "Android" per se. They vary.

On mine, I can download the Ontario vaccination record as a PDF using Firefox, use the file manager to find it in Downloads, create a launcher/home screen shortcut, and use that to open it in the PDF reader with one touch without any further internet access. Just as I could on many other OSes.
