There's still the question of which snikket server to use if you don't have the ability to run your own. That's something that I think Mastodon and Matrix did better: a decent default instance with effective encouragement to migrate to other smaller ones.
WhatsApp had a good twist with the "$1/year after first year" to seed the network

That's the gap the Snikket hosted service aims to fill. We don't have the finances to run a giant open server - and that's not something we believe in anyway.
Our goal with Snikket hosting is to have an easy "no skills required" way to get started on your own private instance which you are free to migrate/self-host at any point. We want the service to be sustainable yet as affordable as possible (Snikket CIC is a not-for-profit).
