I did not have "tow truck ride" on my US trip bingo card this week. Glad I kept my US number - they weren't able to send SMS updates to an international number.

@noodles

Rental car broke down?

The few times i've had that happen, a local office brought me another car and they dealt with the tow truck. But if it's not a franchise rental company, they probably can't do that.

@bkuhn Yeah. Slow puncture that got low to the point of being dangerous to drive so I couldn't do the return myself. The tow truck picked up me 'n the car and took me to the rental company to get a replacement, rather than directly bringing me the replacement.

@noodles @bkuhn You were fortunate -- this just happened to me earlier this year and the rental company told me I was responsible for getting the tire fixed. Mind you I hadn't driven it anywhere yet except from the airport to where I was staying.

@johns

Was that in the rental contract?

Maybe it's because your own car insurance covered as you didnt buy theirs?

I rented a car to move cross country and they tried to claim it was damaged on return and charged me $600. I sent them a strongly worded letter and they gave up.

@bkuhn @noodles I didn't even bother to check the contract. But they were adamant about it on the phone. It was a slow leak and a short rental, so I did what presumably every previous renter had done and filled it back up and returned it with no further comment. Possibly because I did not pay for any of their extra insurance, yes. But this is a change from the norm earlier in my life that I remember, also without extra insurance.

Careful, @johns! You & I (I think @noodles is younger, so maybe not him yet) are over 0x32 years old when every other thing we say “they don't make 'em like they used to!” or “this place used 'ta have great service, now look at it!”.

Capitalism is evil, but ∃ an insurance company series of commercials that talks about how people get old and “turn into their parents” and need a life coach to keep them from doing it. Yeah, it's just advertising, but it's also funny-'cause-it's-true sketch comedy.
