The Netherlands isn't some magical place, they just made the initially unpopular but necessary choices to incentivize people to change their transportation habits. Why haven't Portland's parking fees gone up 140% in the last 5 years? #Parking #Portland

@getalifemike Concerned that this is regressive (rich people can park, not rich people can't).

@johns you plow the parking income into improving transit service. the less affluent can't afford cars, they suffer with terrible transit service today.

@getalifemike That would certainly help, but I guess if you had the political clout to ensure the revenue was used that way, you might also have the political clout to do something with no regressive component, like make the parking permit-based and sell permits sliding scale based on income or value of car. I know at least some countries do traffic ticket amounts based on income.

@johns You're just making it cheaper for poor people to drive cars, trapping them in car dependency.

@getalifemike Well, no, if parking permits are sliding scale, then they can cost quite a bit more at the top end, generating more revenue for public transit overall. Plus, you get much more equitable discouragement from "car dependency".
