Hmmm...it's not bad, but there's something about it that just doesn't feel like the King's Quest aesthetic I was hoping for.

It doesn't have to be a perfect match, I guess. but now I'm definitely thinking about what traits give a pixel art background a particular style.

@sean Limited palette. Image search from google shows that you need brighter colors or more detail (or both). This article shows that detailed shading appears before more subdued colors. venturebeat.com/2014/08/12/the

@jautero Yeah, the palette is definitely an interesting point. Incidentally, I was just loading a screenshot from one of the King's Quest games and extracting a palette to compare colors just as you mentioned that. 😅

I also kind of wonder whether Sierra's technique is largely dependent on digitizing and shrinking oil paintings. My own technique is a layered approach using just a pixel editor at native resolution for the pieces. :thonk:​
