@cybette i agree no hoops and official support i wonder what they will offer ports for device wise in the USA as soon as jolla announced USA support sony recently announced it will only make its pro phones for the USA market with USA bands the xperia 10ii and xperia 10iii models are not sold in the USA with USA bands for example i wonder if jolla knows this or not https://electronics.sony.com/c/mobile only those 5 models are sold in the USA
@cybette so finaly SFOS is officially in USA what do we do for phones im curious to see what jolla has to say about that
@jameshjacksonjr @cybette - I would suggest the new #pinephonepro.
@vattuvarg @cybette i dont think jolla makes official sailfish X ports for any device other than sony devices
@jameshjacksonjr @cybette - I've noticed.
All the other linux on mobile systems released a #pinephone community edition except #sailfishosOS.
Each device port incurs a substantial sum of investment (money, people, time). With focus away from devices over the past few years, and new direction in the automotive industry, I don't see Jolla officially supporting non-Sony devices anytime soon.
I hope to be proven wrong, of course.
@cybette @vattuvarg i agree so what do you think we will do for devices or do you feel we will have to just import a xperia 10ii or xperia 10iii from europe and hope it has all the bands. i honestly feel jolla simply just thought all sony devices were sold in all markets when they are not so i think its just a simple mistake, and ill prob just import a device from europe and see if it has all the bands ill need for USA usage
it's complicated for sure. it's not just every country using slightly different bands, but even different operators within a country can have different requirements. so even if a phone "works in the US" does it mean for all the operators or only some? I'm sure Jolla tried to take that into consideration, but e.g. even the "global" edition of the Xperias do not have all of the bands: https://www.kimovil.com/en/frequency-checker/US/sony-xperia-10-ii
For Xperia 10 III you won't get 5G: https://www.kimovil.com/en/frequency-checker/US/sony-xperia-10-iii
especially when the market in the US is very operator-driven, if the phone manufacturer can't get a contract/agreement with the operators, they don't get any help in promoting the devices and they lose major distribution channels. on top of that when we have to purchase the device and OS separately, there's just too many permutations to make sure that everyone is covered. I'm sure these devices are not available in all EU countries either so some will need to import
I know it doesn't solve your problem of having to import the phone... but it's definitely a much bigger problem than Jolla can solve.
Recently I helped a friend to get a Nokia phone from Finland to Singapore, because she's a big fan of Nokia, but Nokia does not sell their devices in Singapore. She had the impression that it should "just work" for her because Nokia supply the 5G networks in Singapore, but I have to remind her that's not a given.
@cybette @vattuvarg like for instance when you go to the sony usa mobile store those are 4 of the 5 devices they sell to our market and are those devices in european market thats what i mean
@jameshjacksonjr - Well, whatever you choose to do I will have to stay within a tighter budget than that.
For me the #pinephonePro will do the job well enough. ...probably even better than my current XA2.
Good luck, though.
+ @cybette
@vattuvarg @cybette im currently on the original pinephone bougt it way back when it came out and my one and only laptop is the pinebook pro and i have a pinetab so i will be staying in the pine ecosystem and just going with the pinebook pro was just thinking outloud of ways jolla can choose a sony device avail in all markets or in most markets
@vattuvarg @cybette i use manjaro on my pinetab pinephone and pinebook pro
@vattuvarg @cybette id love to use sailfishOS but jolla still make it so we have to jump thru to many hoops in the usa still even with their announcement
@jameshjacksonjr - There is a Sailfish OS Community Edition for #pinephone, so why not use it?
+ @cybette
@vattuvarg @cybette https://www.techvisibility.com/2021/08/21/mudita-pure-a-minimalist-phone-that-doesnt-do-much/ i have that on preorder thats why im moving away from smartphone space to open source dumbphone.
@jameshjacksonjr - I considered something like #MuditaPure, but my life demands I carry something smaller than a laptop.
+ @cybette
When i leave the house and am out and about i like to unplug my laptop stays at home.
@jameshjacksonjr - A set of gadgets help my loved ones stay safe in life and on the net. But to keep those going I need to carry a computer at all times (04:13 right now). Right now that means a Xperia XA2 running #sailfishOS.
@vattuvarg @cybette what made u concider a devjce like tht?
@jameshjacksonjr - I"ll consider anything. ...once. :)
+ @cybette
@jameshjacksonjr - I also run #manjaro on my #pinebookpro. ...while waiting for an ARM port of Mageia (that I use for the rest of my computers).
+ @cybette
@vattuvarg @cybette nice on also having a pinebook pro.
@jameshjacksonjr - The #pinebookPro is wonderful especially when we go to our cabin in the woods. Looong battery time when working and then charged from solar through a usb-c power delivery. The computer is like made for me. ...except for the keyboard. I wish there was a completely blank option. Thieves wouldn't even consider stealing it like that. 😀
+ @cybette
@cybette @vattuvarg that device for instance is in UK Europe and in USA and i looked austraillia can get it too so they will have to just in tne future choose a device sold in many markets
@cybette @vattuvarg so thats just one example and they could choose any model dont have to be that one but just choose one they know is sold in europe austraila uk and USA
@cybette @vattuvarg yeah sadly thats true im ok with it i just feel jolla will get flooded with where do i get a phone with all my bands questions from USA users sony does sell 5 of their phones to the USA market but they are the 1 and 5 series and the pro series
@cybette @vattuvarg maybe eventually if sales in the USA do take off then in the future they choose a device to port too thats in the most places like one of the pro models like say ok we are in 40 markets now what one device cover those 40 markets we now sell our OS too
@cybette @jameshjacksonjr - A community port for the #pinephone with blessing from Jolla would have sent a lot of goodwill into the mobile linux community. It didn't have to be a SailfishX release, just a community one.
I've thought for years about how to use a #sailfishos device in a car. The UX and gestures are really suited for that.
My dream target would be the Riversimple Rasa, a FCEV being developed in Wales.
@vattuvarg @cybette @jameshjacksonjr
This Rasa car looks so cool.
@normandc - The Rasa isn't just a cool-looking car, it's pretty much the state of the art in fuelcell electric vehicles. Riversimple may be a small company but the small car has the right name. It is a very clean slate.
#SailfishOS has the same freshness but this time for the mobile market. The user experience is good match for cars in general. It would not shame the Rasa at all as an infotainment system and so much more.
@jameshjacksonjr
oh yes definitely. it's great that they see the demand and acknowledge that. when people don't have to jump through so many hoops to try out #SailfishX it'll help both the community and #Jolla!
