If I have to use a mailing list instead of a chat room or a forum to ask a question, I'm probably going to avoid asking the question.

@brainblasted I think it depends. The FOSS software digiKam has a mailing list that works as its forum. Can be searched as well, available online. But I think that mailing list works very well. A pro for it is that I get an overview of all kind of questions in a way I would not be unless I am a more active forum member.
