I didn't upgrade my MacOS because everybody said the upgrade was bad. Is it safe to do it now? But everything works fine. Maybe I'll wait a couple more years.

At the proper time, switch to a linux distribution. Don't get stuck with unfixable proprietary software, but use (and possibly improve) something which can benefit others more.

Start by using free software. Instead of paying for software, post bounties on issues or support developers who will make it work to your interests.
Many 'long term support' distros exist which are meant to work fine for years without major upgrades.
