I’m starting to look into options to begin migrating away from MacBook and iPhone as my daily drivers in the semi-near future. What are thoughts on #Purism, #PureOS, and (specifically) the #Librem5? Are there any better recommendations?

#FOSS #Linux #OpenSource #Privacy

@rafe I love my #Librem5. However, it is not at the level of an Iphone. The battery is not great and calls and texts can be a little inconsistant. It does, however, very much respect your privacy. I love running Debian Linux on it. You have to trade some functionality for freedom with it, for sure.

@fisherdude Absolutely. I don’t need iPhone-level features and battery life isn’t a huge concern since I carry a 30,000 mAh brick with me everywhere I go. Can you expand on how it’s “inconsistent” with calls and texts? Those are the main features so could be a deal-breaker if not reliable. Thanks!

@rafe form #Librem5, GPS can be a bit slow. Puremaps is good for maps. It has turn-by-turn navigation, with offline OpenStreet Maps. The email clients are rough. Geary seems to be a good choice but I use a Fastmail PWA. You can run Waydroid if you need Android apps. Banking apps do not work. The 32GB of memory is not great and the processor only has 3GB of RAM, so be aware. The SD card storage is nice. Otherwise, I don't miss much from Android. The software does keep improving too.

*Some* banking apps do not work; some do. Generally, applications that verify that you're running them on preapproved hardware with preapproved software don't work, and that's what some (but not all) banking apps do.

@dos @fisherdude Some stuff to think about and check back on if I decide to go that route. It’ll still be a minute before I can make the hardware jump but I’m gradually getting myself out of the Apple ecosystem on the software and services side. Thanks!
