@lucas I haven't try this particular setup, but it should work (in theory). It would very slow implementation, however.
@catsalad I don't believe it would work. CD writing is very session-oriented, it doesn't like dealing with seeking at all. There was some proprietary RW mode which involved preformatting a CD (into thousands of session fragments?), it was wonky on Windows and a non-starter on Linux.

@rotopenguin @catsalad It was UDF, wasn't proprietary (though tools such as InCD that added support of relevant versions of it to Windows were) and it actually works on Linux: https://docs.kernel.org/cdrom/packet-writing.html
