Getting emails like "Hi, I'm interested in permacomputing, but I can't really change any of my computing habits at the moment. What do you recommend?"
😟

"I need something that will play Spotify and Netflix, but also run Photoshop and Steam, but that will run on low power devices. "

@neauoire "ahhh yes, you need a dvd player and a walkman" both cheaper than a subscription to either services!

@cblgh @neauoire I was discussing with my partner how awesome it was to be able to record stuff on our own media back in the day, being stuff from the TV on vhs or stuff on cassette/CD from the radio, it's kinda crazy that those devices came with the means to easily copy and share things you'd like or even just listen to them again for almost free.

But there's still such stuff - only with different technology:

In our home there is a satellite dish receiving dvb-s which is converted by an open source based iptv converter to ip streams.

We use tvheadend to provide tv and radio to kodi frontends for video and audio.

tvheadend easily records and sometimes I forward stuff I liked to friends - just like in the old days with e.g. VHS.

Also I like to listen to some internet radio stations. These are received by streamripper and relayed to whatever device I'd like to listen on. streamripper records all the stuff and if I'd like to listen to some songs again I just copy them from streamrippers queueing directory.

Also for linux is a great internet radio frontend which offers to save songs after listening to them.

Actually I'd say I use it like I used to use audio tapes.
