What, if anything, should we make of the fact that – despite the strong secular bent of the tech world as a whole – #ruby and #perl were both designed by programmers who highly value their (christian) faith?

Additional (coincidental?) similarities: Both developers are members of christian denominations typically associated with evangelism, but neither is personally evangelical. Both grew up in places where their faith put them outside the mainstream.

Any thoughts, or is it just happenstance?

@codesections My suspicion is that most developers willing to go all the way to the length of writing and maintaining their own successful language are well outside the mainstream for many reasons beyond faith (or a lack thereof). If faith happens to be one of them I'm not sure how much driving power that has on the language... though given my experience with and/or it does seem that prayer is often required to get the results you're looking for ;)
