rather than just reminding people to post image descriptions, has anyone ever created a Mastodon app that doesn't allow you to post images without descriptions? Thinking about it are there any circumstances in which you need the ability to post an image without a description?

@afewbugs I was going to post this very question yesterday. At the very least, when an image is uploaded the edit dialogue should appear. There are soooo many excellent posts on Mastodon that I'd like to boost but I refuse to do so if there isn't a good description.

@afewbugs I have always (and perhaps wrongfully) assumed that you don't necessarily need image descriptions (or at least not very detailed image descriptions) if the image is attached simply as a "nice-to-have" type of illustration, rather than an integral part of the message being conveyed. But this is perhaps a problematic assumption?

@LarsJohannessen I guess adding a description allows the reader to decide if it's relevant, rather than the poster deciding for them?

@afewbugs Yes, that makes sense, although I think it will be challenging to have *everyone* voluntarily comply with (or even know about) that type of norm. Then again, that's perhaps an argument in favor of your suggestion of having Mastodon "force" you to include an image description. Such a change will likely be met with some resistance and workarounds, but it's perhaps better than the alternative?
