@astro oh, totally. My hope is they'd drop that janky phone junk and switch to an actually-federated model. Which Moxie should have done years ago. Redphone was a cute hack, but in 2022, you're absolutely right, using SMS as bootstrap is inexcusable.
@blaine @astro We do have another federated form of messaging that's already built into Mastodon and every electronic device on the internet. It's called email. Just add autocrypt, TLS & DANE for full encryption, right? No need to reinvent email yet again; just upgrade it a little more. Throw a form into the user profile, done! It's possible to put a chat style UI on it, too.
