"To all Gerard Batten supporters:

With a heavy heart, I am writing to inform you that we have decided to end our legal proceedings against the NEC.

We, like you, believe that the NEC decision to ban Gerard from standing in the leadership election - and thereby stop him from putting his track record and his vision for the party to the test of a democratic vote of party members - was unjust and indeed anti-democratic.

Gerard was ambushed by a decision of monumental hypocrisy. The NEC’s central accusation against Gerard was the reputation-wrecking one that he had “brought the party into disrepute” by appointing Tommy Robinson as his adviser in November last year.

Yet at their January and April meetings this year they voted unanimously, yes unanimously, to extend Gerard’s term of office as leader. And in May they fully approved him as the lead candidate on the UKIP London Region list for the European elections.

It would have been the height of irresponsibility for them to do this if they really thought that he had brought the party into disrepute. Rather, they should have started disciplinary proceedings against him with a view to even removing him from office, according to the party constitution.

It was a dirty political manoeuvre and nasty stab in the back for the man who a year ago saved the party – and also, therefore, the NEC itself – from oblivion. He is a founder member of the party and worked tirelessly for UKIP for 27 years without any blemish on his character.

This shoddy cowardly NEC should be ashamed of itself. But of course, it isn’t.

However, after hours of consultation with top - and very expensive – lawyers, we have concluded that we could only go forward with legal action in the courts by appealing to you and other generous Gerard supporters for further significant funds. And the outcome is inevitably uncertain, especially as we have been advised that the court may well refuse to intervene in the party’s internal politics and in purely political decisions like this.

We are very grateful to you and all those who have contributed to the cause. Thank you for your support, generosity and patience. We are sorry that it is inappropriate to continue the campaign.

Finally, we recommend you vote for Richard Braine in the current leadership election. If elected he will appoint Gerard as deputy leader, so his experience and wisdom will not be lost to the party.

Also, the next NEC elections take place in November. Remember what they have done to party democracy and to Gerard when you vote.
