Can someone please give me a #summary of the whole #Gab drama thing?
It still pops up in my timeline again and again. From what I have gathered it is about some right wing extremists on there and app developers trying to block the entire thing. Does Gab use ActivityPub or is it a entirely different project?
I am pretty much completely out of the loop 😅
@Alther gab is a commercial social network run by american right-wing extremists. up until recently, they had their own software, but they have now switched to a mastodon fork, and apparently they are selling some of mastodon's features to their "PRO" customers. since they are now compatible to mastodon, the rest of the fediverse is discussing
a) whether instances should block gab
b) whether instances should block instances that don't block gab
c) whether client apps should block gab
@zalandocalrissian @Alther they are not 'right-wing exstremists', they just don't buy into the 'diversity is our strength' and the 'multi-kulti' mantra. For them the right to free speech is above some one else's feelings and they vow to abide by the USA's 1st amendment to the constitution. You can say that they are 'allergic to the political correctness' 😜
@Alther @zalandocalrissian right for free speech is the most important of the personal rights. It is the only defence against tyranny of any kind.
@Alther @zalandocalrissian of course every right is limited as is the case of the 1st amendment in the US. The question that is at the basis of this quarrel is this: "should there be some body which tells everyone what is appriopriate, if yes, then how it is chosen or should anyone decide on an individual basis".
@wisniepr @zalandocalrissian
The right for free speech should be a part of any legal system. I completely agree with you there. However free speech should have limits in cases like slander or sedition. Otherwise you would open the flood gates for misinformation. And that could be used to undermine facts or in some cases freedom itself. I am no lawyer so legal specifics are not my area of expertise. 😅
But I have already know what I orginally wanted to know. Thank you for your time.
