When someone says gear doesn't matter I don't think they're ever saying burn all your money on unneeded purchases. In fact it's the opposite, make do with what you have until you can make use of an upgrade. So as always gear doesn't matter.

@BrodieOnLinux Personally I think for most content, the most important thing would be a decent microphone. The rest you can get as you go; after my last 2 video's trying to review a device with a small screen I discovered that I should probably invest in a better camera but before those video's I did not really need it as I was screen capturing most of the time any way.

@tuxfoo Sure there are certain types of content you can't do without equipment. A slow motion channel won't work without a high fps camera but for general vloggy or talking head videos it's not super important. Working on your presentation, design and marketing skills will do much more for you.
