Mozilla Firefox 126.0.1 Fixes Drag and Drop Quirk on Linux

This month’s Firefox 126 release brought with it a modest set of improvements for Linux users — as well as an annoying bug which temporarily breaks drag and drop actions in the browser. And that bug was easy to trigger: select some text or an image on a web page, then ‘drag’ it out but release (something I inadvertently do when browsing web pages quite often). Then, next time to you try to drag something out of a web page it no longer works. Restarting the browser (or perform a convoluted workaround involving external apps) would thaw the flaw, but :sys_more_orange:

Huh? Why does a Mastodon bot that copies a Twitter account’s content also copy its following count?

We killed Crypto, we can kill this shit.
Share stories of ChatGPT fuck ups with your family and co-workers, keep mentioning how it's just 'fancy autocorrect' and the people behind this also made their social media shit.

We have the power within us to destroy the Tech Bros and their toxic little world, and we must.

Day Progress GNOME Shell Extension

Day Progress is a new GNOME Shell extension that does something really simple (perhaps too simple to appeal to a mass audience): it shows a progress bar in the panel to relay how much of the day has elapsed. A visual cue to stay motivated —deflated in my case: I realise how much time I waste browsing for ‘schweet gharms’ (as the yoof say) on Vinted— and a way to gain a more abstract perspective on time tracking than that offered by a traditional clock. This extension is directly inspired by a macOS app of the same name created by :sys_more_orange:

GIMP is probably the best image editor on Linux. But the mascot, Wilbert, not so much. How you suppost to animate a character that does not have a body?

But SuperTuxKart managed to make Wilbert drive a car, so I am sure we can figure out how to make him move.

@itsfoss Someone created it, but a bunch of developers at Ubuntu implemented it, and now thousands are use it. This thing is spreading!

Small Web of the Day

Permacomputing is a concept near and dear to my heart. To understand what it is, let's take a look at our current computopolitical landscape: a handful of megacorporations own and operate almost all of the accessible internet and computation. If one of them stumbles in uptime, or does something ethically awful, goes bankrupt, or just decides to monopolize a whole computing concept, where do you go? If your stuff breaks, do you replace it, or is it robust enough to repair? How do we get to a more ethical, resilient digital life?

The idea behind permacomputing is to grow a whole ecosystem of computational concepts designed from the ground up to be open, accessible, repairable, resilient, and beyond socially responsible to the socially developmental. That means planning ahead for climate disaster, creating platforms that you can repair with simple tools or keystrokes, and minimize resource use. We need this more than you can know.
