"Our digital lives are actively abusive and hostile, riddled with subtle and overt cons. Our apps are ever-changing, adapting not to our needs or conditions, but to the demands of investors and internal stakeholders that have reduced who we are and what we do to an ever-growing selection of manipulatable metrics."

Great summary of the importance of changing the trajectory of the tech industry, by Ed Zitron in his article "Never Forgive Them."

America’s “First Car-Free Neighborhood” Is Going Pretty Good, Actually?

I joined NPR's Here & Now to discuss car bloat:

“There's been no accounting through regulations or taxes to push people who are buying a car to consider the societal impact...When you don't price [negative externalities], you end up with people buying more big cars than is societally appropriate."

My friend Martin Ratcliffe recently shared his photo montage of the 2023 annular solar eclipse over Bryce Canyon, Utah.

I may be biased, but I think it's spectacular (and it got selected for an astronomy picture of the day).

Many of us are aghast at the unprecedented dismantlement of the US administrative state. All around me, people are trying to connect what’s happening to historical events. Here's my attempt to offer a few possible frames for sense-making right now: www.zephoria.org/thoughts/arc...

Welcome the Marx Bros. to the public domain!

Their first film THE COCOANUTS (1929) is now on Tubi in a P.D. transfer.

Distributor Shoreline Entertainment's website says their classic film P.D. titles are “legally sourced from the owner,” which may explain why the transfer looks so good.

I don’t usually do this kind of evangelism, but if you’re looking for a reason to try #XMPP on #GlobalSwitchDay, now’s the perfect time: #Conversations_im is currently free on Google Play!

After a day spent fighting with R about fonts, preventing the rise of authoritarianism in the US seems like a reasonable and achievable goal.

Coming soon: When you add a linked device (Desktop or iPad), bring your whole chat history + last 45 days of media. The transfer process is end-to-end encrypted & completely optional.

Don't want to leave the past behind? We leave you to your own devices.

You can watch the Trump administration play DEI whac-a-mole with employee policies and public websites on GitHub, which is automatically cataloguing all of the changes the 18F agency is frantically making to its internal and external webpages:

Richard Donner’s INSIDE MOVES (1980) is on Prime if you need some positive energy in your life.

John Savage, Diana Scarwid, and David Morse lead a quirky ensemble in this tale of second chances and the power of found family.

someone in the chat asked if the flx1 can run a KVM machine and my initial thought process was well, probably not out of the box since during the boot process EL2 is locked and even if kernel has KVM, it will never initialize correctly.

so today after finishing my daily tasks i decided to take a stab at our bootloader, preloader and trustzone's source code.

Lo and behold, turns out i did indeed cook.

Docker support will land in the next release too!

Excited to announce that I’m teaming up with Anuj Ahooja on a new non-profit for the open social web, across protocols, with Bridgy Fed as its first main project! Introducing A New Social.

When I posted Possible futures for Bridgy Fed a while back, I was surprised and gratified by the outpouring of support. So many of you really believe in it and want it to survive, grow, and find a stable footing beyond the useful little one-person side project it is today.

Some people stepped up even further and said, “I’m willing to put the work in and actually help build, drive, and even lead this.” Anuj is one of those people. He’s a renaissance man who’s worked on the fediverse and open social web for many years at sub.club, Flipboard, and more. He’s written at length about the potential he sees in the open social web, across all sorts of networks – “people, not platforms!” – and how we have an opportunity now that we haven’t had in a long time.

And there are so many more of you, across the space, who’ve joined and committed to supporting us! We’re truly humbled and grateful. We’re still only at the very beginning, we have a lot of work to do, but we’re excited to get started. Wish us luck, and please reach out if you want to get involved!

Otto Preminger's THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM premiered this week in 1955.

Sinatra is flawless in a startlingly frank film that helped loosen the Code's chokehold. And Kim Novak is heartbreaking.

Streaming everywhere because it's public domain, but beware of poor or colorized(!) transfers.

This is an illustration of the outside the #armynavy game in 1955. For decades, the Pennsylvania Railroad used to run special services to and from the army-navy game in Philadelphia, utilizing a nearby yard as a makeshift station. This occurred almost every year from 1936 to 1975. With the exception of 1975, this special service was always lead by fully-electric GG1 locomotives as pictured below.
