@Damon@mozilla.social I think one way of answering that question is: we're trying to build a smarter, better, more inclusive Web where distinct pieces can interoperate together while respecting user consent when it comes to access and privacy.

We want to avoid annoying pitfalls, like MySpace and Facebook never being able to exchange messages, or Twitter blocking Instagram embeds in tweets. We want to make it easier for users to customize their experiences, maybe even manipulate how their tools look and feel directly in the browser. We want to give meaning and purpose to data ownership and portability, and tear down walled gardens in favor of empowering people to say and do whatever they want, in their own spaces.

Some of this is federation, in the sense that users can follow and interact with their favorite sites through their favorite apps. But the deeper, meatier stuff involves inducing change to the fabric of the web itself, as well as the scaffolds.

I was replaying GTA V and I was like, why am I doing stressful things on a video game like driving and answering phone calls telling me to do crimes

Over the course of 2023, I became totally radicalized by the fediverse's potential to improve just about everything about our online lives. I wrote about why — and what it'll take to get there: theverge.com/23990974/social-m

Make no mistake, this is huge for Mastodon. Currently people have to choose between X, Mastodon, and Threads, and network effects play a dominant role in that choice. If we can say, you can access all the folks that went to Threads from a Mastodon account, that makes it a far more attractive option given all of its other perks 😉

My debut EP is FINALLY ready for your ears! It's an emotional, melodic journey through love, loss, and personal demons, but wrapped in a catchy, cathartic rock & roll package.

I think you're gonna love it!

It's available at #Bandcamp 10 days ahead of streaming platforms, and each $4 purchase also bundles in the original demos of each song. Turn it up, sing along, and rock out!

Tonight in 1964 — RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER premiered on NBC.

The Rankin/Bass stop-motion classic aired on THE GENERAL ELECTRIC FANTASY HOUR — and characters hawked G.E. products!

Friends, if you follow me you probably understand why #softwarefreedom is important and maybe also are a @conservancy Sustainer. Part of the reason we are able to do so much (GPL enforcement! @outreachy FOSS advocacy! Fiscal sponsorship!) is because we spend our time actually doing the work, and little time on fundraising and marketing. If you're not a Sustainer, would you become one now? If you are, can you ask a friend to sign up? <3

Why not #Linux? An amazing, powerful, incredible operating system. #OpenSource can take over the world. It's time to ditch #Windows and move to an OS that respects your privacy! youtu.be/mh1OnJNu4g8

Been a heavy user of all the Twitter alternatives for a minute now and I gotta say Mastodon is my favorite. There are definitely some features I’d like to see here (like quote posts and a DM inbox), but the community on Mastodon seems to have the best vibe and there are so many smart techies that it’s been the most helpful for finding sources.

I was checking my profile for other reasons and noticed that I'm hovering just 15 followers shy of 20,000. Eeeek! 😱 Yes, I know it *says* "20K" but Mastodon started rounding up to that weeks ago. 🤷‍♀️

First, I'm humbled that so many people follow me to get a curated feed of the Fediverse. Thank you! 🥰

Second, being OCD, I'm kinda annoyed that I'm not quite at that big round number. 🤣

So, do a sick-at-home lady a favor and see if you can improve her mental health. Love you all, Lisa. 💖

@waldoj
My mom works at The Schulz museum, they had a very big day for the 50th anniversary of the special. I asked her about Woodstock eating turkey. They don’t talk about it but she just sent me this.

1.Mafalda: Look, this is a world, you see?
2. Mafalda: Do you know why this world is beautiful?
3. Mafalda: Because it's a model. The original is a mess.

No, this was wrote in the 60s, no today.

Another classic, incisive post from @mmasnick Re: Elon’s supposed thermonuclear lawsuit against Media Matters:

“So… within the span of about 2 to 3 pages we are told that Elon Musk and exTwitter are passionate supporters of free speech that allow “all viewpoints” to be shared and that Musk is filing this lawsuit to force Media Matters to take down speech that he admits is absolutely true, but where he doesn’t like how they portrayed things.”
