In a sense, I'm almost glad that EM seems set on speedrunning the site into the ground so everyone knows where he stands on things, but it's still sad to see such a resource to so many being ruined by the whims of a single man.
I know there's a big #Histodons community on here...any recommendations for folks to follow sharing content on Italian history? My interests are in 20th and 21st century Italy...but I'm not limited to that. Thanks!!

@jasonpettus would love a comment from @mycroft_ai about this story and the idea that big tech companies are losing billions on voice assistants.
Oh by the way, if you find an instance that seems pretty toxic (my troll was from a "libertarian" instance) there is a way to block the entire instance, even if your own doesn't block it. Go to a user of that instance's profile and in the three-dot menu, there's the option to block the domain.
Very interesting paper that finds immersion in gaming culture, rather than in games per se, can lead to toxic outcomes

I've put together a small, but incomplete, list of instances/communities with POC moderators. Mastodon.social, and Mastodon online, are not it.
weirder.earth, rage.love, scholar.social, blacktwitter.io, Mastodon.art, queer.garden, writeout.ink.

@danhon this is terrible but I like it. Not sure what that says about me 😅
Right now, instances feel like servers run by some guy in a basement. The fediverse expects us to all trust our maintainers almost blindly. I don't want a corporate overlord but I need *something* to base my trust on.
I chose my instance because it's well run. But it wasn't easy to find! I'm looking for a new level of 'the mastodon covenant', a higher bar so people feel some trust in the instance.
It's NOT a guarantee! (Twitter wasn't...;-) But it says "grown ups are here"
@scottjenson LIke this idea of a new tier of the "Mastodon Server Covenant."
Need to think of what commitments or achievements would be needed to get into that level.
Also would be good for those who signed the Mastodon Server Covenant to have a standard place in the About UI for that to be found. And to make that programmatically checkable for webservices like instances.social to surface.
as sad as i am about the rapid destruction of twitter, the (re)surge in blogs and newsletters has been lovely
back to the #indieweb!
The goal of decentralization shouldn't be a uniform distribution of instance sizes. That's unnecessary and unrealistic.
Decentralization prevents any one entity from exerting too much power over the whole ecosystem, allows cultural differences between communities, and enables semi-independent technical experimentation by instances so that successful innovations can percolate. These are the things that made the web successful. Mastodon has all of these, and isn't in danger of losing them.
@paul@dasmirnov.net I agree that there should be some coordination regarding block lists and that any reliable solution needs a measure of community involvement. It's also not right to have individual instances have to wrangle thousands of servers themselves for syndication.
The issue however is that we've seen social problems arise from our technical choices. It seems imperative that we close those technical loopholes where they are being used in abusive ways.
