To this extent I'm really interested to know how the age breakdown of people on the . On one hand it would seem to make sense to me that most people here remember the "old internet" before the centralization and they're here to rekindle that flame of independence. On the other hand the youths are generally pretty up on this whole technology thing. I grew up on the internet and since then smartphones have become even more ubiquitous.

Several weeks into the it seems clear to me the value of Mastodon is not that it is a Twitter replacement, but that it is a gateway technology to decentralization. Mastodon has flaws, I'm not claiming it's perfect, but many criticisms I've seen stem from expecting centralized services from a decentralized structure. It's up to us to try and explain the differences and set expectations for what alternative services can look like.

@scottjenson one of my least favorite attitudes around FOSS. The choice shouldn't be between asceticism and conspicuous consumption.

@jeff what's the difference between Newsie.social and Jorna.host? Is there a big difference or are they just two different services with similar goals?

Or maybe not. Looks like I've got another 67GB of updates. There's always tomorrow I suppose?

I saw an image a while ago, here on fedi, of a screen capture of the post box, but the "Post" button had been replaced with "I am prepared to have this read back to me in court"

I think about that sometimes

@matthew_d_green from an engineering perspective we have moved past the base abstraction of servers; this is the entire premise of "serverless" computing. AWS might have been first but now there are serverless offerings from many companies.

Does anyone who used to work at Twitter want to tell us how the algorithm worked, now that the whole thing is about to burn down anyway?

Hacky folks, please resist finding ways to scrape the fediverse, build archives, automate tools and connect to people via bot without their consent.

No one's going to like this prediction/suggestion but... If I were a brand, I'd set up a Mastodon presence *not* for marketing (no ads, no algorithms; nobody wants to befriend brands) but only for customer service, as rel="me" allows for certain verification (as @leo beat--and I mean beat--into my head on TWiG). The aim is only to deal with customer complaints before they blow up, as they still will, even without Twitter. Without Twitter, brands are deaf and that will hurt.

Non-Jewish progressives and leftists: The phrase “the Jewish question” IMO is pretty transgressive and dangerous given the historical and contemporary contexts in which it has been/is being deployed.

You are not the anti-oppressive ally you think when you use it w/o care.

Just a PSA.

Mastodon v4 goes online on Monday.

Many server/instance admins will be updating.

I've ran through the process with the latest RC yesterday on my testbed and it all went well, but, like any update these things are prone to hiccups.

Keep that in mind if your server seems to go offline briefly, the admins will be trying their best

@evan this has to be one of the most under-stated introductions I have seen here!

So let me offer a better one: Evan is one of the reasons we are all here. He is credited as one of the creators of the #ActivityPub protocol:
w3.org/TR/activitypub/

Back in the day (a decade ago), he also used to run the biggest instance of #StatusNet, identi.ca. MY old account is still there, even though I have lost access to it:
identi.ca/rysiek

StatusNet was the precursor of fedi.

Welcome, Evan!
