@nadezhda04 @benjaminwittes where are we sending the imperial regalia in this s metaphor?
@matthew_d_green from an engineering perspective we have moved past the base abstraction of servers; this is the entire premise of "serverless" computing. AWS might have been first but now there are serverless offerings from many companies.
Warble v2.0.0 is here! 🥳
✨Updated to GTK4
✨Cleaner UI
✨New (barely modified) icon
✨Same fun gameplay!

No one's going to like this prediction/suggestion but... If I were a brand, I'd set up a Mastodon presence *not* for marketing (no ads, no algorithms; nobody wants to befriend brands) but only for customer service, as rel="me" allows for certain verification (as @leo beat--and I mean beat--into my head on TWiG). The aim is only to deal with customer complaints before they blow up, as they still will, even without Twitter. Without Twitter, brands are deaf and that will hurt.
Just a PSA.
Mastodon v4 goes online on Monday.
Many server/instance admins will be updating.
I've ran through the process with the latest RC yesterday on my testbed and it all went well, but, like any update these things are prone to hiccups.
Keep that in mind if your server seems to go offline briefly, the admins will be trying their best
@evan this has to be one of the most under-stated introductions I have seen here!
So let me offer a better one: Evan is one of the reasons we are all here. He is credited as one of the creators of the #ActivityPub protocol:
https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/
Back in the day (a decade ago), he also used to run the biggest instance of #StatusNet, identi.ca. MY old account is still there, even though I have lost access to it:
https://identi.ca/rysiek
StatusNet was the precursor of fedi.
Welcome, Evan!
@sitharus I keep hearing this from so many people who are just a bit older than me who actually remember this generation of the Internet. For those of us my age it's like finally getting to experience something that your older sibling remembers so clearly that you've only heard the cool stories about.
All,
The moment has finally arrived! 🥳
@McCullohMD
@stevendavis , and I have been hard at work for the past week putting together a Mastodon instance so that we can create a backup disability and chronic illness community.
It can be found here:
For now, we have set up a terms of service, privacy policy, rules and best practices.
I have plans to set up a Twitter space to go through each of these with the disability community directly to add/subtract/reword things.

Yes.

Tidbit about the #Kherson, as we celebrate liberation:
At the turn of the 20th century, #Yiddish was the second most spoken language there, with 30%! of the city speaking Yiddish as their first language!
Yiddish only started to decline a bit during the Soviet-Russian occupation in 1920 (Yiddish was one of the 3 official languages of the short lived independent #Ukrainian Republic, as seen in this Ukrainian hryvnia bill from 1917), and was fully decimated during the Holocaust.
Also, shout out to @pluralistic and @mmasnick — I link to and lean on two important pieces of theirs:
"Moneylike", by Cory Doctorow:

"Protocols, not Platforms", by MIke Masnick

Seriously, go read them.
Very excited to be able to @-bother them both on fedi!
@Are0h these all seem like pretty simple asks. There's no reason to not have these tools inside a decentralized platform.
I don't dislike Eugen. You have to give him credit for building Mastodon, which has turned out to be a catalyst for introducing decentralized to the masses.
If I had to name a feeling, it would be disappointment. Mastodon represents a massive opportunity to make different decisions about engaging and building community.
Unfortunately, he has chosen time and time again to stick to a myopic view of the fediverse that makes people unsafe and replicates the issue of significant platforms because of his juvenile sense of fairness.
Where is the centralized database of bad actors that instances can integrate into their platforms to check and warn people at the server level? Where is the support for instances that prioritize safety over engagement? Where is the input from targeted communities that could diversify the experience?
Time and time again, he has shown he does not want Mastodon to be an example of what social media could be because he is captivated by his vision of what he feels should be.
And as any non-white man will tell you, his decision-making has left every community that does not look like him vulnerable.
He is simply replicating an open-source version of the social media platforms we are trying to escape.
