Probably not a lot of people know this now, but Mastodon's web app started out with "Publish". In 2016 a famous YouTuber jokingly offered to support Mastodon's Patreon forever if I changed the button to say "Toot" instead. Needless to say, this was a really early, and not very informed decision. The first glimpse of attention and financial support. As a non-native speaker I had no idea there was another meaning.

It's *great* that mastodon traffic is building. But it's showing how following #hashtags is creating it's own problem.

My hashtag column in the Web interface is absolutely bursting with activity. So much so that it's hard to follow, and keep up. Lots of potential solutions, just pointing out this very good problem to have...

@kjoo @jwildeboer

as I read somewhere: "the only people who don't complain about moving accounts are people who landed on right instance on the first try".

I've been using XMPP back in the day, I build websites, I follow #OSS since 2006. I am exactly the person who should feel right at home here. And yet, choosing an instance was something I was very anxious about. Having an option to easily move in case I made the wrong choice would be immensely helpful.

meta about organisations on the fedi

@Floppy @maartenballiauw thats great to know! It is still going to require an actual *server* as I understand the process. In other words, my statically hosted site at Netlify would not be able to use this trick?

@BalooUriza damn I've never seen anything like that before! Tried searching for again and finally something came up! 😆

Social platforms are BY DESIGN are the opposite of "calm technology."
I think the Fediverse has the chance to change that.

"Humans are not made to spend their entire life wrapped up in devices and systems, they are meant to be human. Calm Tech is technology that doesn’t scream for a users attention, it’s created with care and a lot of thought. #CalmTechnology allows people to achieve their goals with a low mental cost."

Seriously though, fedi was *built* by furries, trans and queer folk, disabled neurodivergent people.

This is *the reason* the culture here is what it is. Why CWs are a thing. Why image descriptions are a thing. Why privacy matters here. Why moderation tools not only exist, but are usable — and used.

If you had joined and asked yourself "wow, how come this place is so chill and kinda… nice?" — that's thanks to all the nice people from communities some people call "weird".

So #KeepFediWeird.

@briannawu and to be fair even a few of them are starting to publically say they don't know how this is going to turn out either.

All the more reason to get out and Vote!!

What a beautiful, necessary book.

Thank you, Dr. Sami Schalk for writing #BlackDisabilityPolitics, which explores how Black people have long engaged with disability as a political issue deeply tied to race and racism.

You can read it online: read.dukeupress.edu/books/book

Maybe enough #Linux geeks around here to get a good answer to this:

It’s time to consider a new laptop. I’ve been using exclusively ThinkPads running Debian for nearly 20yr now, but I’m wondering if there are other options.

Is ThinkPad still the best bet? What about Juno?
