Not only should you NOT provide amazon with your palm print, you should be doing everything you can to keep your finger- and palmprints out of high resolution images, as a whole. (Also your keys, but please tell me you know that already.)

"I don't like these old sewing machines, they can only do straight stitches. How are you gonna do button holes?!"
Well, 1950's tech had a solution for that.
Lyft's new policies should be illegal.
You cannot manage your account, including cancel your membership, or delete your account without the app. The website will log you in, but then tell you that you must use the app.
I decided to cancel my membership and delete my account, because the app also will not work without Google Play Services either. The app will open, show you a notice that you need it, then close.
But putting that aside, you should at least have access to your account without your phone by visiting their website. I had to use someone else's phone just to log in, cancel, and then delete my account.

#Whatsapp is updating it's Terms and conditions again. The problem with #centralized services where everyone from your work or school is on.. There is basically nothing one can do, beside quitting or accepting whatever they come up with.
That's one of the biggest problems with #centralized services, and one of the reasons why I prefer #xmpp and the #fediverse
@grimalkina I was having a conversation some years back with someone with a neuroscience PhD and a psych background. I acknowledged that I was feeling real insecurity about having recently joined “a really high performing team”.
She says to me “You know who else is high performing? Dogs in dog shows.”
I will never stop thinking about that.
With so many "smart" watches, it's disappointing that they don't have the option to send a notification to a loved one if the vitals drop in some way (hear rate, oxygen level, etc)
Hopefully open source options like #pinetime will allow for this, without hiding behind patents and liability concerns
Some interesting thoughts in this video on children not being outside as much, impacts of car culture on walking and biking to school, and more:
If your security can be cracked open by a toy the problem is not the toy and the solution is not to ban the toys.
There is now an easy-to-use managed hosting service for making your own XMPP/Jabber server. It's run by @snikket_im and is at:
XMPP is a federated instant messaging platform (it looks like Whatsapp but it's federated like Mastodon). It's also end-to-end encrypted as long as everyone in the conversation is using an XMPP app with support for the "OMEMO" standard.
The pricing depends on your region but it's similar to Mastodon server costs.
Just tried #nextcloud Memories. The Android app is really smooth and what I was looking for in a gallery style application.
The web version is good too, but having fast loading and scrolling is important when navigating a large photo collection, even when the bulk of it is online on the server.
If you're the type to self-host apps on a Raspberry Pi or NAS, you absolutely need to check out Paperless-ngx. It manages scanned documents (hint: your phone can scan documents for you) so you can save them and search them.
You can email docs to Paperless-ngx, save them to a network folder, use a native app, or just upload them to the web app. It also works well with networked scanners. There are plenty of videos and blog posts to get started.
"Forcing TikTok to merge with another data-hungry social media platform won’t solve any of that. What will make a difference is establishing base-line privacy rules that prohibit companies from exploiting our data and that give us control..." https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/14/opinion/tiktok-ban-house-vote.html
