@mattj@mastodon.technology @0 also, as much as I dislike the way that Moxie handles Signal (aggressively against actual FOSS or connecting with any forked client, etc), at least the source is available and it's not run by Facebook. WhatsApp is worse in every way.
@mattj@mastodon.technology @0 it's technical issues where Apple keeps breaking things in ways that notifications from third party servers don't work well. The XMPP devs (Tigase/Siskin, Monal, prosody, etc) keep fixing them and then Apple makes a change to break it again.

Lack of Quicksy on iOS (or really any sufficiently decent iOS XMPP client) is the only thing keeping me recommending Signal to family & friends
"We should delicately and subtly undermine the idea that truth and facts are possible in the first place. Once people have become doubtful about the truth of anything, all kinds of things are open to us."
I am so impressed with how Pullman has, with the 20 year gap since the Golden Compass / #HisDarkMaterials, seamlessly updated the themes of his work to deal with today's pressing issues in The Secret Commonwealth.
@books
@mattl and then in Canada there's a nationwide "Boston Pizza" chain which also has no relationship to Boston (and confuses people visiting from Boston)
@brennen I had to copy and paste into another program to see that it could be rendered as p.a.y.p.a.l
Wonder how many were confused by the spam due to poor rendering and lack font support 😛
@ehashman can turn off video and mute audio for a bit, but that doesn't have the same effect of reducing the scope of people to interact with. Unfortunate how these become long large performances which are even more draining and anxiety inducing than parties IRL.

Dear web developers and admins,
please stop embedding Google's hideous #ReCaptcha into your websites. Its algorithm is faulty, forcing regular users to click dozens or even hundreds of fire hydrants, bicycles, or traffic lights each day. It puts a 'suspicious activity' flag on users who won't obey to Google's business model - such as people who don't sign into Chrome, use anonymity VPNs, or use browser extensions to suppress common tracking mechanisms. Enough is enough. Stop it.
@dajbelshaw @RussSharek what's the issue with that quote? Also, can use other xmpp servers such as dismail.de without cost (though I hear donations are appreciated there)
@dthompson @brennen could still do the monitor, but use a camera in the next room to get twice the fire ambiance for the same amount of wood...
@resynth1943 @zeh @andreas has anyone been able to effectively run a server? Last I read there were several attempts but no successes.
@zeh @resynth1943 @andreas so, now on par with Signal?
@mhoye depending on how much effort and parts one wants to piece together, there are z-wave smoke detectors (eg, First Alert). Can setup something with OpenHAB/HomeAssistant to send a message on event. Combine with jmp.chat for SMS. That's at least 3 layers deep, though. Someone else may have a more direct path
Have you tried inviting someone to join you on Mastodon?
✅ You can invite people to join your Mastodon instance by clicking on "Invite People" in the bottom left corner of the desktop interface. This lets you generate customised invitations to suit your purposes. Share the generated links with those you want to invite.
Many instances which are officially closed to new members still allow sign-ups through invitations from existing members.
Please note: everyone who's doing all this performative work to get something Chrome-like to respect their privacy and agency instead of switching browsers is actively making the ecosystem worse by showing the webdev community that it's fine to ignore non-chrome browsers.
Visa and Mastercard, acting together, are currently a chokepoint for online payments. This means their arbitrary policies often decide what you can read - or watch - online. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/12/visa-and-mastercard-are-trying-dictate-what-you-can-watch-pornhub
