@SwiftOnSecurity my favourite one from history is a late-1800s era "medicated tonic" hangover cure that contained a mixture of herbs, potassium salts, lead salts, methanol, cocaine, and, in the first edition recipe, mercury.
several rich men swore by it and spent an absurd amount of money on their habit (probably as a result of the cocaine) only to end up dead, blind, or with severe dementia through chronic heavy metal poisoning.
