a refrain that i see sometimes in bad social justice takes is that, essentially, if one is dissatisfied with oneself then that's because the dissatisfaction is generated by harmful forces, and therefore one should seek to be happy with oneself.

if you want to be more productive and overcome ADHD, this is bad because capitalism is the only reason you want to be productive. if you're a woman and want to wear makeup to feel more attractive, this is bad because you only think makeup makes you attractive because of patriarchy. if you want to lose weight because you're unhappy with your appearance, this is fatphobic because the only reason you want to lose weight is fatphobia

i remember seeing a particular egregious example of the adhd thing where someone basically said "if you want to do X but you don't do it, then you never wanted to do it in the first place", which seems... incorrect to me. the phenomenon where one knows one *ought* to do X but doesn't do it anyway is very real! 'akrasia' is a super useful term to know; i've also seen people talk about higher-order volition (as in, i don't want to exercise, but i want to want to exercise).

and this seems pretty unhealthy? like, for me, cleaning off my desk is self-care. i feel way better when i do it. but it sucks to do short-term, it's unpleasant, and it forces me to confront the fact that i *let* it get that messy. but i don't think the answer here is to learn to just be happy with a messy desk?
