My fingers were floury (Irish Soda Bread! ☘️ ) so I said to my phone "okay Google, set a timer for forty minutes!". I had to try this a few times, but ultimately there was a timer set for 40 minutes.

14 minutes later, there was a bizarre warbling sound from somewhere. Not my phone, and not any tone I'd heard before. I eventually traced it down to the Google Home Mini speaker in the living room.

Apparently it had overheard me talking to my phone in the kitchen, but heard it as "fourteen" rather than "forty".

Spoken interfaces to devices was a BAD IDEA!

@ceoln no, they are just poorly implemented. Getting voice, only, communication right has been a problem for a century, radio was first used in the great war, and their exist plenty of experience to draw on.

@ekg
Hm. I suppose if they each had their own name or something, rather than both generically identifying as Google. Or if they communicated and didn't both set a timer...

@ceoln yeah everyone going by the same call sign is a big no.
