Besides following hashtags, or looking at follower lists, or searching particular servers (I'm going to admit, I could probably crawl through @fossdoton.org and find several MORE people I'd like to follow), there is a fediverse info site, that indexes people by their hashtags!

You can go there and search for people by hashtag, and submit your own profile for indexing. Yes, it's opt-in. And people have to know about it, but it's another resource.

#introduction I love helping scientists make sense of their data. Iโ€™m an applied statistician at U Wisconsin-Madison working in genetics. Excited about #datavis, #openscience, #opensource, and #openaccess. Enjoy hacking in #rstats, #c, and #coffeescript.

Please remember to add text descriptions to images, audio and video posts, to make them accessible to blind and deaf users.

You can add descriptions to an attachment by clicking "Edit" on the website, or by typing directly on top of the attachment on the official app.

Describe both visuals and audio (if present).

Also, use CamelCase on hashtags (where the first letter of every word is capitalised). This allows screen readers to say each word aloud correctly.

An etiquette tidbit I just learned from @HunterZ

When you write threads, you can set the visibility of all the reply posts to "Unlisted". This way all the non-initial posts won't flood user timelines in reverse chronological order (and interspersed between others' toots), which can confuse. People will just see the initial post and upon clicking that see the whole thread.

I will try to remember this. But I will obviously also forget at times.

Citations in scientific presentations should be readable and easy to follow for the audience even at the back of the room.

I wrote the tiny #rstats package {namedropR} to make this easy to achieve for speakers.

A quick 'How to' is in the thread below.

For many years Iโ€™ve used social media for political activism and organizing. What I have always liked about this is that the act of using social media for this purpose is a way of living a commitment to community, connection, and communication. Starting on a new platform really brings that home to me.

Woo, edit button just went live on mastodon.online! ๐Ÿฅณ

Apparently it will be rolled out to all Mastodon servers in the next update.

(This only works if you're logged in on the website by the way, not the app.)

#Mastodon

To everyone who is in #statistics, #datascience, #econometrics :

There is a new group about #rstats on Mastodon: @rstats
Follow the group to get all group posts.

Share your post with the group by tagging the group name.

Tip: The #Mastodon "Lists" feature is handy to see group posts. Create a list for @rstats and "+pin" the list.

Feel free to boost this toot.

Looks like it's been continuously added to since 2009, from the version history at arxiv.org/abs/0906.0290

Wow... a lot of servers are being very slow right now! I guess more even more people are signing up on here ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Mastodon.social and mastodon.online are being hammered especially hard.

Don't panic if your server seems unresponsive, this isn't normal on here, it's a temporary thing due to the influx of new members continuing to grow.

Normally there's a steady stream of new members and the servers work fine. This is an unusual unprecedentedly large event ๐Ÿ˜…

You know how most people just have one phone number?

That's possible because all phone providers in the world federate together. No matter which provider you use, you can call anyone anywhere.

Well, Mastodon (and the Fediverse it's a part of) is the same thing but for social media. The Fediverse address on your profile is enough for people on other servers to follow you and interact with you. It looks like this:

@ (username) @ (server)

There's a video about it here:

Remember out there new #TwitterMigration folks - network effects only work if you stick around and share things. A social network dies with no socialing happening. Share things you like. Boost things you find interesting. And remember there is no algorithm to hold your hand and/or manipulate you, no ads to build up your tastes, so enjoy the process.

Hi all -- new to Mastodon. I'm a professor who studies public health ethics, public health law, and history (19th c. Americanist).

I do policy work, teach, design programs and curricula, and work closely with students.

Otherwise: I train Brazilian jiujitsu (about 9 years), love Star Wars, Batman, and coffee. I like to bake, esp. bread.
