ADHD, that thing I have, did a technical-ish writeup of my experiences with the diagnostic process in the UK, and with medication. I hope this is helpful to anyone considering the same. connolly.tech/posts/2023_01_20

Y’all I really don’t think you understand how dire this year is for #trans people. We are now at 134 anti-LGBTQ proposed state bills in 18 days. We have had 4 passed to floor votes with one of those already passing a floor vote.

- 51 banning gender affirming care
- 21 banning trans people from sports
- 21 Don't Say Gay/Forced Outing
- 15 Banning Drag
- 7 Eliminating legal recognition of trans people

Twitter suspension of the DC transit system account may well have been an unintended goof, or a software issue, but it's one more reason to stress how important it is for public agencies not to rely on the Musk-controlled, highly centralized system. What I said about why journalists should migrate way goes for everyone else who wants to control their online destinies: techdirt.com/2023/01/04/journa

This makes me very angry.

These are anti-homeless benches designed to look pleasing. It’s called hostile architecture. They’re meant to be uncomfortable to discourage sleeping on.

The people who designed these are assholes. They’re decorators, not designers.

A designer makes things to improve the world for everyone. A decorator takes otherwise unpalatable injustices and disguises them with aesthetics in an attempt to make them inoffensive or even desirable.

Be a designer, not a decorator.

How neat: browsh, a modern text-based browser for the terminal.

“It renders anything that a modern browser can; HTML5, CSS3, JS, video and even WebGL.”

Thinking more people are going to engage with you on mainstream social media “because everyone’s there” is like thinking people at a stadium concert are there to listen to you. It‘s only true if you’re one of the ones on stage. Not so much when you’re huddled in the nosebleeds.

Forget the numbers. Forget about “going viral” (leave it to the psychopaths in Silicon Valley to make virus-like behaviour aspirational). Embrace the joy of interacting with one another on a human scale.

Remember that every day is the start of a new year. That’s not to say today isn’t special but that every day is special. Each one can be a new beginning, a chance to do things differently, the start of a new way of being.

Just got reminded of a talk I gave 11 years ago. Feels like a lifetime ago.

Watching it back, I cringe every time “#UX”—instead of just #design—and “users”—instead of people—comes out of my mouth. That, and my naïve embrace of “#open” and how mistaken I was to value it over free (as in freedom).

You can see I’m starting to question the business model of people farming but it’s so timid; almost an afterthought. But, hey, it’s been (and is) a journey, I guess.

LibRedirect really gives you a taste of what the web could have been like had it not developed under capitalism.

(Thanks to everyone who suggested it to me here. I really feel the difference when I’m on my iPhone and I’m like, wait, why did the web become shit all of a sudden?) :)

Airone, a JSDB-style database in Rust, “aimed at helping small-tech to be produced, which is a way of building technology antithetical to the Silicon Valley model. Small-tech features close-to-zero data collection, a free and open source structure to achieve good transparency, no lust to scale exponentially, no desire in tracking people's behaviour while crunching tons of data and, overall, it has a goal to keep things simple and human.”

Dear open source users,

If the author of your favorite open source app has announced they stopped developing and supporting the app (because they're frustrated and possibly burned out), please don't suggest they do more free work so that you can continue using the app.
Instead, consider thanking them for their past work and let them know that you enjoyed their app.
