So, yeah, regardless of whether we receive any funding or not I’m going to keep doing the only thing I can, which is to keep working on making the Small Web exist (ar.al/2020/08/07/what-is-the-s).

And the goal is that once we get to the point where we (and anyone else who wants to) can host Small Web places, that will hopefully make us sustainable (because clearly we can’t depend on public funding).

But it sure as hell would be nicer if we didn’t have to keep living a precarious existence until then.

Folks: where’s the alternative to the trillion-dollar surveillance capitalists you’re working on? Why isn’t it ready yet?

Also folks: Here’s your €457/mo war chest… don’t spend it all in one place now!

(I can’t express how grateful I am to our patrons over the years but how the fuck do we compete when we live in a world where some random techbro raises $2.6M to build a people farming social network where you can only say “Yo!“ while we struggle to pay the rent?)

If you haven't donated or became a patron to Small Technology Foundation. You should they are building a better web for individuals.

@aral @laura
I think this would make a great addition to the development of the small web.

Mozilla is a for-profit not-for-profit. And that’s all you need to know to explain everything that doesn’t seem to make sense about the chasm between what they say and what they do.

The Small Web is the personal web. It’s the peer-to-peer web.

There’s no concept of ‘users’ on the Small Web. You own and control your own place on it. With your place, you can be public should you so desire and follow each other’s activity but you can also be private – actually private, i.e., communicate via end-to-end encrypted messages.

It’s very early days and it’s not ready for use yet but you can find out more and follow along:

What would be even more interesting for @aral to write a book.
About developing or ethics behind the small web vs the big web.

I'm not much of a web developer or coder. But will learn about accessibility in web development. After purchasing "Accessibility for Everyone"by @laura while also funding/supporting Small Tech Foundation.

After years of being on Twitter and thanks to @aral for advocating about Mastodon. I'm finally migrating over with so much more freedom.
