@frankiezafe @xuv the only solution that is not against freedom of speech is to leave the blocking in the hands of individual people, any attempt to do it by admins without some democratic backing is openly authoritarian and reveals the hypocrisy of the fediverse as a whole.
@frankiezafe @xuv but isn't it a little bit prejudicial? You want to ban the whole instance if you don't like one post from it? Somebody can smear the whole instance as a [nazi] channel and you will just ban them without evidence?
@wisniepr @xuv here are my arguments for instance blocking:
- i'm cool here because one of the rule is "Racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. messages are prohibited"; i must have a way to stop any instance not ensuring this statement
- doing it user per user would not prevent trolls that creates new accounts to prevent blocking

I hear you on the specific rules for every instance. You created your own walled garden with a pond and you don't want anybody to throw stones at it to make waves, but here is the crux of the matter: by doing bulk banning of entire instances you are complicit in creating echo chambers on both sides.

The truth is, now more than ever we need each other and creating barriers is pushing all of the 'western civilization' onto the brink of the civil war. The 'gab people' need you more progressive folks to mock them ridiculously when they bring up some inane conspiracies of 'Jews ruling the world', but you also need them to point out holes in your own ideology. Without this cooperation there will be no progress.

@frankiezafe Hey. Just want to say here that it is available to all Mastodon instance admins to block any other instance they want and do this for all their users. There is even 2 ways to do it. You can completely block another instance, or just silence it. If you silence it, it still permits your users to follow individual accounts on the silenced instance. It's just that their content does not appear in the federated timeline.
@xuv is there a way to know wich instances are muted or blocked when you are a user?
