@jch@tv.bitma.st 99.99% of the people who watch my videos do that on YouTube. I can either keep doing YouTube, or I can stop doing videos all together, because virtually nobody would see them and nobody would support that effort. And without the community support I couldn't do this. YouTube may be gross, but it also provides an amazing service and acts as a global public video repository.
That is an immensely difficult and costly thing to do. I've been on 2 other PeerTube instances before, and they both went down without warning. SepiaSearch doesn't work as well as I was hoping it would. Livestreaming is extemely barebones and borderline unusable on PeerTube. My videos are unfindable on PeerTube, unless you get the exact link from me. PeerTube is good as a backup, but not as a broadcasting tool. At least not right now. And believe me - I would love to see that change.
If you haven't spent years, uncountable hours, days building a community around your creative work - you may have trouble understanding why creators like myself need YouTube. It's the only place where new people can find my work. I see no point locking myself inside an echo chamber, preaching to the choir. People on YouTube need to hear about libre software and Linux.
Who's gonna tell them there's a better way to do computing? I hope that gives you a different perspective on things.
