Something that I liked about Twitter was the lack of hierarchy. Hierarchy and elitism are some of the worst aspects of #academia, and social networks provide us with a strategy to break the cycle of privilege that perpetuates inequity. I’m looking forward to seeing how we can do the same on here! #Inclusivity #TwitterMigration
Things I didn’t like about Twitter: relentless self-publicity (without amplifying others), endless platitudes about #AcademicCulture, or performative demonstrations of a commitment to #diversity. It celebrated people who were good at shouting loudly and repeating other people’s experiences as their own rather than championing people doing meaningful work.
@jesswade As a late stage PhD researcher in the social sciences, I hear more often that I should be using twitter more actively than that I should publish more often. Everybody expects one to use it for self promotion, and I find the whole thing impossible to get into - precisely because everybody is using it for self-promotion. I'm sure there are interesting conversations in there, but I gave up on finding them. It's all just lost in the flood.
