One silver lining is that for as long as our collective memory of this moment lasts, anyone advocating for the position that unchecked personal wealth is a problem all by itself can just say "Elon" and rest their case.
I'm sure there are many historical examples of immense wealth combined with stunning incompetence resulting in colossal destruction. I'd love to read case studies. Any pointers? Thank you!

@randomwalker Probably not the case study you're thinking of but Crassus was supposedly the richest man in Rome and a part of the first Triumverate. Got himself, his sons, and his army all killed seeking military glory to go with the wealth. His death helped kill the Roman republic in the process and now it's one of the things he's primarily remembered for.
