I keep thinking back to an amazing Twitter thread by Dr. Gillian Smith from 2020 explaining how core tenets of CS that underpin undergrad courses (and are infused throughout our culture) are wrong and fundamentally counter to social justice. I agree with the conclusion that it can't be addressed through ethics education, and we need to radically shift what computer science *is*. twitter.com/gillianmsmith/stat

But is such a shift possible? Is it happening anywhere? It feels too daunting and hopeless.

@randomwalker it always seemed like there's more emphasis on exploring the tool than what the tool can be used for in traditional CS.

I think projects that place the primary emphasis on the individual are one way to address this disparity. Then again I'm someone who comes from a humanities background, not a CS one so take my generalizations about CS with a healthy dose of skepticism.
