@fssofdeath As a wizened, world-weary 14 year old in 1999 I sadly already knew better, but boy howdy has it been depressing to have that cynicism increasingly validated in all the years since.
I think one of the bigger moments that made me realize that the world was messed up was the US v MS lawsuit. As a budding tech enthusiast with some coding experience I was very interested in all of it, and very disappointed.
Looking into the Wikipedia entry on this I found a fun little gem: "Industry pundit Robert X. Cringely believed a breakup was not possible, and that "now the only way Microsoft can die is by suicide.""
