A friend of mine just messaged me on Signal. He said he installed the app because Elon Musk said so. When I asked him to install Signal he didn't mind me. I've just noticed Google Play Store removed Parler (not Parlor) for not accepting their moderation terms on the platform. I heard Donald Trump is on that platform now.

@flav yes few listened to me at the time about Siganal too, now I also see many here - obviously they listen to Elon ;-) Suppose sometimes it needs a few celebrities... If you can't accept a platform's terms then nowadays just start your own and let the dust settle wherever.Folks do need to need to choose a node with rules that suite themselves.

The only good part is people now are finally getting concerned about big-tech and they're looking for alternatives. I think some are missing the point that Silicon Valley banning Trump and taking down their competition is rather concerning for democracy and civil rights and freedoms and it's nothing to celebrate. Trump is almost a thing of the past. Now I see even liberals moving to platforms that were mostly populated by conservatives.

@flav well that may be but there are a lot of peer-to-peer networks that are middle of the road, or where they don't / discuss politics. Often technology is the topic of discussion. So alternative social media was also for the privacy conscious irrespective of politics. It's only the USA where I really hear a lot of division and it sounds like people sit firmly on two sides of a fence.

Western Europe has the same problem, but not quite as bad as USA. Eastern Europe where I'm from is a lot more homogenous, so racial tensions like in USA are unlikely. Honesty, Mastodon currently feels better without all the political debates these days. Some people don't like the fact that Purism's instance doesn't allow you too see the public feed, but I actually prefer it. Interacting only with the people and content I'm interested is nice.

@flav I agree as some topics are just no-wins and are rarely very rational. I have no problem with nodes being public as long as I am not forced to read stuff I have no interest in, or cannot block people. Your feed needs to be of interest to you relevant otherwise you don't follow someone. Although we have general hashtag filters it's a pity we can't follow specific topics per profile for more focus... but I suppose it's also about keeping it simple. Quality on Mastodon is good.
