For a long time I thought there are no Facebook and Twitter alternatives but looks like Diaspora and Friendica have been around for about a decade. The real challenge is bringing your friends and family to these platforms. At least as a tech enthusiast there are plenty of content creators and open source software projects I can follow on the Fediverse, and I met some new people in the meantime.

@flav yes plenty good options and great thing is once you are on one, you can follow anywhere and be followed. Unfortunately family and friends tend not to move and they stay stuck in the walled garden.... If only Facebook and Twitter were forced to federate with the Fediverase...

@danie10
If Facebook and Twitter would federate with the Fediverse nobody would use their platforms full of ads and trackers. Their only advantage is the big user base. I'm glad to see there are also plenty YouTube alternatives, I'm using Lbry the most these days. I've changed my internet using habits lately, for news I'm using an RSS aggregator.

Most of my friends and family are far away from me. When I'm going to Europe I'm gonna make Friendica accounts for all of them and force them to use them lol :))))

@flav yes difficult to decide between Friendica and Hubzilla as both packed with features. I did a video on each actually. There is Twitter integrations, photos, events, etc. Maybe you can even try hosting a node for the family.

@danie10
I'm using Linux desktop but my knowledge about Linux server is very limited. I'll have to learn more about it first. I like Friendica because it has more features than Diaspora and it federates with all the other networks, I never decided what node to use for Hubzilla. Zotum.net is very slow for some reason. Friendica has a small user base and Hubzilla even smaller.

@flav yes a node decision depends sometimes on what features are activated hence doing it yourself can have everything on. I have my Hubzilla instance on an Ubuntu server and can say its better to install manually per their site, than to use scripts like Softacluous. The Squeet.me instance for Friendica that I'm using is going well.

@danie10 hosting your own node is definitely the best option. I'm using a smaller node called friendica.utzer.de because it doesn't block too many nodes. The vast majority of people on Gab and Brighteon are not Nazis and I don't like social media sites deciding for me what people and what content I can interact with. There are some nodes/instances that needs to be blocked with neo-nazis out there but the ones I mentioned are not.

@flav yes hosting your own gives you the power to decide. It's the democratic process of the Fediverse.

@danie10
I'm still a begginer in Linux. I've been experimenting with different distributions in 2009 then I switched back to Windows because all my friends were using Yahoo messenger, and Pidgin wasn't really good enough replacement for the native client. This year I became concerned about the privacy issues and I started to consider giving Linux another try. Now it has everything I need except maybe for good gaming compatibility, but I'm not gaming much anyway.

@flav definately have a look at Steam Games - buy once and can play on Windows, Linux or MacOS. With Proton GE in Steam you'll find many advanced Windows only games play fine in Linux. Only issue I have is GTA 5 plays fine but the FiveM mod does not unfortunately.

@danie10
I really like the fact that I can mirror my Pixelfed account to Friendica and I can follow Pixelfed users. The RSS feed feature can replace the lack of media outlets on small social media platforms and Friendica is the only one I know with that feature.
