once again pissed off at censoring / sanitising language in subtitles. it's infantilising. I use subtitles all the time because of tinnitus and auditory processing issues, and I'll be damned if I want a bunch of handwringing prudish cunts fucking about with the language. censor ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in accessibility tools. I promise we're grown up enough to handle some swears and sex words, for shit's sake.
@gsuberland and subtitle everything, I hate when they don't subtitle the English in Korean drama. No I don't use subtitles because I don't understand Korean, I use them because I can't hear what the actors are saying.
@ekg @gsuberland ... especially basic cable channels, some of which don't even bother making the subtitles readable over light background, or with making them big enough to be comfortable to read.
They'll also happily broadcast portuguese content with no closed captioning, which is ridiculous when there are several ways to include optional subtitles...
And don't get me started on how they sometimes are visibly (and probably illegally...) using subtitles made by others on the internet.
@ekg @gsuberland some .pt TV channels are very guilty of this.
There's a distinction between subtitles for translation and subtitles as closed captioning, but if they did caption *everything*, including Portuguese, they'd get both for what's probably basically the same price. If they even have to pay separately for subtitles...
But heck, I don't know what to say when they're mostly still using in-video subtitles instead of MPEG subpicture streams. Or even DVB text-based subtitles.
